Black Diamond Crape Myrtle

Black Diamond Crape Myrtle is a stunning Crape Myrtle with striking black foliage and masses of vivid color blooms. As an Intermediate, Best Red™ will grow to a maximum height of approximately 10-feet to 12-feet tall and 8-feet wide.

The Black Diamond variety represents the first series of true dark-leafed crape myrtles. … Crape Myrtles look particularly nice when lining driveways or fences and can also be planted in a container on your deck or patio as long as the container is at least 12 in.

Crape myrtles are drought tolerant, mildew resistant, and low-maintenance.

Planting Black Diamond Crape Myrtles

Select a nice sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a hole about three times as wide as the root ball. Place the potted plant in the hole to make sure the hole is large enough and making sure the top of the root ball is even with surrounding soil. Remove the pot and place the plant back into the hole, filling in around the roots with soil. Apply about 2 inches of mulch on the plants soil and water thoroughly.

Fertilize a new crape myrtle in early spring,  beginning in March or early April. Add 1 teaspoon of a general-purpose fertilizer once a month until August, spreading the fertilizer evenly over the soil around the plant. Mature crape myrtles need to be fertilized in early spring when the plant begins to actively grow then again in early summer to encourage blooming.

When planting for the a driveway or fence border, plant 12 to 15 feet apart. For a flowering hedge, plant 2 to 3 feet apart and cut down to 4 inches tall each winter. If using as a patio planter, plant in a planter at least 12 inches in diameter.

Caring For Your Black Diamond Crape Myrtle

To help crape myrtles retain water, mulch with organic matter 2-3 inches deep, making sure to keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk. Water regularly until established. Remove dead branches any time and prune weak branches back in the spring in order to encourage a strong and productive tree. Fertilize once per year as new growth emerges.
